I teach in a low income, working class area in San Diego. A majority of my students are English Language Learners. In fact, some of my students are the only English speakers in their family! Some of these students are reading below grade level, due to their language. The rest of them are reading at grade level, but due to lack of funds, do not have much of a selection of chapter books and more challenging stories to read from. Although my students are at different levels, I have found one thing that brings them together, and that is chapter books!
