The building I work in is very unique. We service all of the district's fifth and sixth graders throughout the county in our area. We are currently the most diverse school district in the entire county. Our population is 50% percent free and reduced lunch. Due to the size of our building, our resources are stretched much of the time. Many of my students do not own books much less games that will help in their learning. My classroom has a variety of diverse learners who need more than just sitting in class and reading.Comprehension is a struggle for many of my students. Comprehension is the prime reason for reading! Why read if we do not know what we are reading? Good readers think actively as they read. They use their experiences and knowledge of the world, vocabulary, language structure, main ideas, character traits and other reading strategies to make sense of their reading.
