My class is a wonderful group of 6 and 7 year olds that love using manipulatives to solve problems in mathematics. They are proof there is no such thing as a "math gene." They are great at communicating and working together to solve math problems and create number sense.
My school is a Title One school with 100% free lunch. Many of my students live in homes with little money to provide many things we may take for granted. Most of my students live with their families in studios and trailer homes and currently two of my students are homeless. Nearly all of my students are bilingual and come to school knowing very little of both Spanish and English. Despite these challenges they have a real desire to learn.
