I teach in a very special program called an Integrated ASD class. It is designed to support kids from 3-5 who have ASD and can communicate but have some challenges when it comes to play and communicating with other kids their age. I have ten kids from the community who are especially verbal and social, they are my peer models. Then, I have 10 kids who are part of the special education program in the district. We get to learn everything that is covered in a traditional preschool but do it all through the lens of building social skills and awareness, which in preschool means lots of play. The program is set in one of our Title 1 schools in the district, a small diverse and loving school with a strong community. My students make me laugh all day and it is a joy to be their teacher.
