I have 20 students in a rural elementary school in North Florida. It's located in an agricultural community which has attracted mostly Hispanic farm workers for several decades. Our school is approximately 60 percent Hispanic now, with very few migrant students. Education is extremely important in these families. Attendance rates are high and behavior issues are relatively small. Parental involvement is very high as our school administrators make every effort to have translators available for meetings and events and all correspondence and forms are now in English and Spanish.
All but seven of my students are Hispanic, and they are all fun-loving, cooperative and love to listen to and look at books. I want to expose them to as much language and vocabulary as I can squeeze in to this school year. Language acquisition fascinates me and I am always wonderfully surprised by how quickly they pick it up.
