My students are often asked to get out a "choice book" for silent reading time or after they finish an exam. This can be a surprisingly agonizing choice for some of the students on my caseload.
I want them to learn to enjoy reading and have high expectations, but they're worried about how other kids perceive them. What if their reading level is lower than the rest of the class? They don't want to feel like they're being asked to read "baby books," but I don't want them to try and read books that are too hard for them and thus confirm their misconception that "reading just isn't for them."
A variety of book options, such as the graphic novel set I am requesting, that are at their level but also, ya know, look "cool" can really help out in this negotiation process and provide confidence to a blossoming reader at a time when they need it most.
