There have been multiple studies that show a positive correlation between academic performance and the use of alternate forms of seating in the classroom. Research proves that all students learn differently, some students like to stand or wiggle while they work. Using different options for seating, such as stability balls, stools and cushions, students get their blood flowing while still working.
When most of us think of a classroom, we envision children sitting at their desks and a teacher at the front explaining a concept or teaching a lesson. Although that vision still holds true in many classrooms, teaching is evolving to meet different learning styles. It is not foreign anymore to see a teacher on the floor with her students and the students moving around the classroom while learning.
The goal of this project is to give my students flexible seating, or different choices of places to learn in the classroom. Flexible seating will strengthen our classroom environment and get students that needed movement.
