My students are not only diverse in age but they come from many different backgrounds and speak several different languages. Every day my students inspire me to become a better art educator. They tackle each art project with excitement and dedication. The skills that they acquired and the work that they have produced from the beginning of the year inspire me to continue to challenge my students through the exploration of different art materials.
A majority of my students are English Language Learners. The arts offer all of my students a venue for self-expression. For my English Language Learners this is especially important. Many struggle on a daily basis trying to communicate and connect with their teachers and their peers.
Through exploring art materials, my ELL鈥檚 are challenged to explore ideas and come to conclusions about themselves, their peers and their surroundings. As my students learn that they can manipulate materials for expression they develop confidence and motivation to succeed. Through art projects that I plan, my students are not only strengthening their social communication skills but their academic communication and comprehension skills as they are encouraged to use art materials to reflect upon ideas and topics studied in math, science, CKLA, social studies and language arts through a hands-on approach.
