Making Medieval studies engaging for 13-year-olds takes the work of an Alchemist! Paulo Cohelo's international best-seller is a parable about following one's dreams. Set in northern Africa at an indistinct time in the past, this novel is engaging and relevant for young learners learning about this geographical location, it's people and their culture.
Novel studies have proven be to be an effective way to to expose students to experiences outside their current reality. It's a great way to build authentic vocabulary. The use of literature circles during our novel study teaches our students how to cooperate, take turns, and have engaged peer discussions.
Using a novel study as an anchor across multiple subject areas builds engagement, vocabulary, and cooperation.
