My High School is a Title I school in a rural district. It has 120 students and spans 60 miles of ranch land. We are situated right next to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and over 80% of the student body is Native American. This creates a unique and very special classroom environment.
My students are limited in their opportunities for numerous reasons - physically, we're a long distance from other towns and enrichment activities. We also suffer from a lack of funding - South Dakota is 47th in the country for teacher pay and we're one of the poorest counties in the state and there just isn't room for "extras" that make education memorable and exciting.
My goal is to show them a world outside of the one that most of them have rarely (if ever) left. They deserve an equitable school experience and I strive to deliver just that.
