The majority of my students are from high poverty homes and all of them receive free breakfast and lunch at school. The majority of my students do not have shelves filled with books in their homes. They check out 4-6 chapter books each week at school and crave the opportunity to check out more. I have a limited supply of books in my classroom library and a very limited ability to do genre studies with my students. I am requesting a class set of books so that each student in my class is able to physically hold a copy of what we are reading. This is rare for my students and I know that this would not only enable them to understand genres (one of our curriculum requirements) but would also encourage a life-long love for this genre of literature.
