We have a high poverty population, with many students coming from single parent homes. The majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch. But we are a neighborhood school. The students are able to walk and ride their bikes everyday. We are the center of this community. With all the challenges facing my students I am constantly amazed at their enthusiasm and excitement to come to school. They love to learn! They walk into school with a smile and a hug for every teacher they pass. They know that they are in a place that is safe and welcoming.
In my class it is a very exciting day when we start a new project. It is very difficult to hold them back. I never have to worry about a lack of motivation from my students! But they do struggle relating to and understanding the world around them. Because of their circumstances they have a difficulty in seeing beyond what is on the outside.
