I am teaching middle school special education. Students have a wide variety of needs, but one that they have in common is that a quiet and comfy space to calm down and self-regulate would be really beneficial.
Self-regulation is an important skill for these students to learn, and understanding when they need to remove themselves from a situation is helpful. I am hoping that they will have a proper place to do that.
These kids, just like all middle school students, love to have some freedom in the classroom. Creating a space for them to feel like they can relax and be themselves is crucial to my learning space. I do not want to make it feel like a punishment or for them to feel bad about going there.
I've also requested some coloring resources, fidgets, and a magazine subscription.
