My 9-12th grade Musical Theater Production course is helping our school prepare for our first musical: West Side Story.
The sewing machines and materials will give my students hands-on experience working with costumes, enriching my current theater arts curriculum, all while supporting our upcoming production.
By providing these materials, my costume crew will be able to spend their class time:
- sewing knee-length circle skirts for the Jets and Sharks girls
- mending donated clothes for Jets and Sharks boys
- repurposing donated prom, homecoming, and bridesmaids dresses for the "Dance at the Gym" and "America" scenes, using petticoats to give them a glamorous 1950's flare
- creating custom costumes for future performances with heavy duty Singer sewing machines
My students are so excited to be participating in this new course. My hope is that our costume crew has the opportunity to see some costume pieces through from start to finish.
