The students in our classroom are naturally curious about light. Inspired by a Dia de los Muertos activity in October, students began constructing their own light boxes with LED tea lights, rope light, and flashlights. For weeks, students manipulated lights, mirrors, and objects to play with shadows, proportions, and reflections.
Eventually, the light batteries ran out; curiosity, on the other hand, has remained constant. Each day, students asked if we have gotten new flashlights and tea lights. They are anxious to continue exploring and experimenting. Our students deserve high-quality resources in addition to their student-centered and child-led educational experiences.
This project will allow students to continue to construct their own understanding of the world around them. The mirror center will allow students to make meaningful connections to concepts such as symmetry and embedded shapes in geometry. Imagine the wonder of placing a translucent triangle and square on the light table and seeing it turn into an entirely different shape in the mirror! The project also includes manipulatives that inspire inquiry and open-ended exploration.
