I am privileged to work in a public neighborhood school. Unfortunately we are a school in a high poverty area where survival is sometimes put ahead of academics. I teach in a fifth grade inclusion classroom of 28 students of all different academic and social-emotional levels. I have students functioning at a kindergarten level all the way through to those who are on track to grade level proficiency. The toughest job I have is to get students to feel comfortable and confident with their own level of achievement so they can continue to strive for academic success. My greatest achievement is to watch my students build each other up and encourage each other to push on. We have three mottoes that we stand by: Mistakes are proof that we are trying, Have an attitude of gratitude everyday, and I believe in what's in me. I know that by building my students up emotionally I will see great academic success!
