I've learned that sometimes it's easier to push through the day than call in sick and prepare for a sub. I'm currently battling breast cancer and sometimes I'm just not able to come in to prepare. My coworkers graciously step up and prepare my class for the day. I know it's not easy having to help my substitute and be present in their room.
If I had the collection of books then I could leave a book set with work and activities ready for a substitute to grab and use. It takes the pressure off my grade level team to set my room up and fill in my substitute on what to do throughout the day. The books are meant for each month to connect with a holiday or with a topic taught in 2nd grade. By having a class set of each book it gets the books in their little hands and keeps them engaged. It gets them to read and not just the substitute. It allows them to take the book and work with a partner or group on a project related to the story.
Let's make my class thrive even when I'm not there.
