This quarter 9th grade students in Baltimore City are supposed to analyze justice and injustice using the text 鈥淭o Kill A Mockingbird.鈥 Always ahead of the game, my honors section read 鈥淭o Kill a Mockingbird鈥 last year in their 8th grade class. I want to provide my students with a different text to inspire advocacy writing, and also to show them the impact a strong protagonist can have on the lives of the people around them.
I hope to use the text 鈥淭he Help鈥 to inspire my 9th graders to never keep quiet about injustices in their community. My students have shown they are more than capable of analyzing injustice, and tracing its impact through history to their lives today. I hope after reading 鈥淭he Help鈥 my students will be more vocal about their discontent with injustice, and that as a class we can find ways to actively advocate for our community.
