Creating an inviting and inclusive classroom space means meeting the needs of each learner so that everyone is able to feel comfortable to express themselves and develop essential skills.
The first step to creating an inclusive learning space is by offering soft lighting. Harsh overhead lighting can have a strobing effect on some students, causing migraines and fatigue.
Secondly, students at CVPA often rely on school meals and snacks. It is essential to provide healthy snacks for students to enjoy throughout the school day. I added bulk snack and a mini fridge to house healthy foods that I purchase for students.
Thirdly, research has shown that flexible seating leads to positive learning outcomes for diverse students. Students should feel comfortable in their learning space. When kids are comfortable, they feel empowered!
Lastly, books are foundational to the learning we do in high school English. I am always adding culturally relevant books to our classroom library.
