"Mr. Turner, what has caused this type of segregation and difference between whites and blacks in America?" This is the type of question my 8th graders are asking in class, and are eagerly exploring in our "Civics in Action" curriculum. About two-thirds of my students are immigrants to the United States, learning English as a second language while engaging with high school-level texts and adult-level topics. Many have experienced racism, discrimination and harassment from police, and are curious to learn why these things happen and what they can do about it.
Already in our class, they have written letters to the Boston Police Department requesting a dialog, created a display for Peace and Justice for the school to see, and researched the shooting of Michael Brown as a way to practice research, sourcing, and corroboration skills.
