My students love learning and love moving! It is really hard to expect 5 and 6 year old learners to sit in a traditional seat during instruction, discussions, and independent work time. These students need to move to keep their brains engaged and their motivation increased!
Flexible seating allows for student choice. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom they work by. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. The clipboards allow students to lay on the floor and still have a hard surface to write on.
Flexible seating encourages students to find a spot that鈥檚 best for them to stay relaxed, focused and productive. Students who are comfortable are more likely to be engaged in learning. The pillows allow students to sit anywhere around the classroom with some cushion for added support and comfort. The ball chairs are the perfect seats to use during our centers time. Students can play learning games or listen to stories on tape while enjoying the comfort and movement of these seats!
And most importantly, flexible seating helps make learning fun. When students are able to choose their own seating, they feel empowered and are able to learn in a way that works best for them. This allows learning to be more fun and excitement, which will likely lead to students developing a love for lifelong learning.
