In a world still healing from the pandemic, children have missed out on so many crucial experiences with their peers and families. World drumming creates and builds a sense of community, which is invaluable during this time. It is a safe, interactive activity the students can enjoy participating in even with COVID safety protocols in place. Virtual and hybrid learning took a lot away from my students' music education this last year. We were unable to make music using instruments. Music is powerful. Music is something everyone should be allowed to experience.
"Experience first, then intellectualize." - Carl Orff
Children learn best through play. I can lecture about world drumming music, but my students will learn best if they can create it and experience it themselves. Not only does world drumming help them with the skill of rhythm and steady beat within the music, it also helps build up their self-esteem. Students learn how to be independent musicians through ensemble playing. A safe space provides them an opportunity to try and fail and to try and succeed. I believe a class set of tubano drums would provide my students with a meaningful learning experience.
