One of the biggest issues plaguing youngsters these days as they spread their wings to leave the nest, is the fact that they don't know how to "adult". We are sending them off into the world with a lack of basic financial literacy understanding and skills. There are dozens of Nevada Academic Content Standards throughout K-12 education that cover different aspects of financial literacy, but what these kiddos truly need is the opportunity to experience financial literacy.
The items that this project would fund are all going towards an immersive financial literacy program for my classroom. Students in my 12th grade Government/Economics class will become fully entrenched in making decisions about money (spending it, saving it, and general decision making... basic "adulting"). They will earn fake money for different classroom tasks and behaviors. Students will be required to pay monthly bills. With any remaining money they will have the opportunity to pay for trinkets, snacks, experiences, and more. There will be choices they must make along the way, such as renting vs. purchasing, which will result in students experiencing a unique financial literacy simulation.
Some of the NACS that my class will accomplish with the use of these items are:
SS.9-12.FL.1 Analyze the alternatives and consequences of financial decision-making in the development of financial goals.
SS.9-12.FL.4 Develop and evaluate a personal financial plan - including a savings plan, utilizing a financial record keeping system for accounts.
SS.9-12.FL.5 Analyze the costs and benefits of different types of credit and debt - including how to avoid and resolve debt problems.
