The classroom library and books will help every reader in our 1st grade level to continue to develop their reading skills. In every subject, students have to process meaning through letters and words associated with what they read. The pandemic has caused many of my students to fall behind by not having access to adequate books on their reading levels. The pandemic also did not give them a safe place to read these books.
With these new books and a new classroom library, my students will be able to read texts that are at their independent reading level in a safe, welcoming area. They will have access to choose books they are interested in so they can continue to figure out words and phrases they need to succeed in transitioning forward to 2nd grade. All of my students have developed interests in reading, and these new books will help encourage these interests! The classroom library will also give them another place to be able to feel safe and comfortable to read books. When kids feel at home, they are able to learn and retain what they read. Reading is the beginning to learning!
