My students need to use tactile toys and manipulatives in order to stay focused on learning activities in class. For example, while working on IEP and curricular activities involving letter, colors and shapes, the students will choose an accordion tube or stuffed animal so they have something to hold and touch in order to stay focused, or they will try to leave the work area.
All of these tactile items will give students a choice of activities to help them stay calm while learning. We like students to make their own choices as much as possible. In giving students choices, we give them a voice in their learning styles.
