Many students with autism have a dysfunctional sensory system. This can affect balance, muscle movement and strength. These sensory issues may be the underlying reason for hand flapping, rocking, and spinning. The three basic senses affected are tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive. The scooters I am requesting will help students that need sensory integration in the vestibular system. These scooters will help students receive the sensory integration they need to be successful.
The vestibular system refers to structures in the middle ear. Dysfunction in this system can make it difficult to walk up and down stairs, swing on a swing, or ride a scooter or a bike. It can also cause a student to seek out spinning, whirling, and jumping activities. These different scooters will give my students the opportunity to take a break and get out some energy while working on large motor skills, balance, and sensory integration.
