My students are excited about learning about music. They will be learning the recorder in 4th grade, but there are no instruments yet for 5th grade. The ukulele, with it's small size and malleable strings, is a very accessible instrument for my students. With it's recent rise in popularity, my students will be able to use the ukulele as a tool for positive musical expression. They will develop their literacy through reading music for their instrument, as well as a basic understanding of the science of acoustics. It will also take my students beyond classical music and help make connections to music they're more likely to listen to on their own time.
Unless otherwise stated, all projects will benefit both Alfred and Lyman Elementary Schools.
