It is essential I work in small groups to ensure that each child is taught at the level at which they perform. While having small groups, the literacy and math centers will be used to reinforce concepts that they have been previously taught. The children will have hands-on experience manipulating the pieces so they are learning while having fun.
My students will be able to "play" while learning.
The students will be able to reinforce concepts at these centers, which will help them excel. They will learn how to share with other children and problem solve. The Language Instant Learning Centers - Complete Set from Lakeshore Learning Materials is a great example of this. This set includes hands-on centers which reinforce concepts such as letter recognition, letter sounds, sequencing, sight words, etc. which will be taught during small group lessons. Students will have to share these centers with each other, and problem solve in order to complete the activities provided.
Having these centers will also help with vocabulary because they provide clear pictures of items the children might not be accustomed to seeing. The Shapes Instant Learning Center from Lakeshore Learning Materials, for instance, includes clear images on each board that match with certain shapes. When doing this activity, the students are not only learning the vocabulary for each shape, but the vocabulary for each image as well.
