My students are from an inner city. They are extremely hard working and have the will to want to learn. These students face many problems on a daily basis at home and in the community they live. Many come from single family homes or foster care. I am often reminded each day that they have seen more strife and been through more turmoil in their short 3-5 years than I have in my 30+ years. But when they come to my classroom they are full of life and they are wanting to soak up anything and everything that I can provide to them. More than anything, many want to take home the experiences they have learned in my classroom. Nothing is more rewarding to hear than the child retelling one of the day's events to a parent as they pick them up at the end of the day.
