Some of you may be wondering, just what is cardio drumming? Basically, cardio drumming is a high-intensity work out, combining whole body movement and drumming in time with the rhythm to create a unique and fun workout for anyone. It only requires the most basic equipment -- a pair of drumsticks, an exercise ball, and something to place your ball on or in to keep it from rolling away. Not only is cardio drumming a form of exercise that can be done in a relatively small space, but it is so much fun that students often don鈥檛 even realize that they are exercising! With the current shift to social distancing in physical education, cardio drumming is a prime example of a new activity I can introduce my students to, that can be completed while remaining in their own personal space, and uses minimal equipment. While I plan to be outdoors as much as possible, during the long, cold winter months this may not always be possible and adding cardio drumming to my arsenal would allow my students a safe, yet enjoyable, outlet to release their pent up energy by pounding away on the exercise balls to some of their favorite songs. And not only will the exercise balls be used for cardio drumming, but I also plan to incorporate them into several fitness activities. Students in all grade levels would have the opportunity to receive a total body workout combined with dance and rhythmic movements, all while improving their hand-eye coordination. Children who participate regularly in physical activity develop greater self-esteem, eat and sleep better, and concentrate better in class. Anyone and everyone can be successful when participating in cardio drumming; it is an energetic, yet inclusive activity.
