Learning the piano will help to develop a variety of skills in these students. Many of these students have no access to private music lessons, which develops study and lifelong learning skills. This will give them an opportunity to learn to push themselves musically, and later academically, through the use of differentiated instruction gauged at their skill level.
Neurological pathways are connected while playing the piano that can then be utilized in other disciplines, such as mathematics, science and engineering. Numerous scientific studies have shown that producing music stimulates the brain in ways that almost every other activity cannot.
With the push in STEM learning, this would combine both music and technology and help to provide the cross-curricular ties into math and the sciences. Lastly, this would give the students a creative outlet and provide a medium by which they can express the, selves in a positive manner and gain confidence in front of others, which is crucial to employment at many levels!
