I teach at the junior high level and research shows that by the time my kiddos get to me, they read less and question less. I don't want compliance in my classroom; I want passion and desire to read books that challenge student thinking and create an environment of questioners about the world around them. The best way that I've discovered to accomplish this is through real-life Book Clubs in my classroom. Student choice is the number one driver in motivation and I am seeking to continue this through Book Clubs next year. With these books on my classroom bookshelf, students will have immediate access to new choice of novels that are relevant to today's issues they face.
I want to bring back a passion for reading at the junior high level so that students read for exposure to new ideas and concepts, not because it's on the to-do list for our lesson.
