My students need hands-on experience to learn and apply skills of following directions, communication, and handling money. This will be best achieved through an authentic, real world experience of a school coffee shop. Each week my students will become baristas, where they apply these essential skills. Students will use a Keurig coffee maker, coffee, tea and supplies to make and sell coffee to teachers and staff. This hands on experience will also allow them to interact with teachers around our school that are not part of their normal circle. It will also facilitate the essential skills of greeting and eye contact with people they are less familiar. By allowing them more opportunities to interact with one another, they will experience a greater sense of community.
All of my students are concrete thinkers, in order to fully understand money, they need real-life, hands on practice. This will give them the connection they need to fully grasp the concept of money.
Profits from sales will be used for future supplies with any excess going to support the school store that is already in place. In the school store, students can purchase items that range from necessary (clothes and school supplies) to fun. Students will be paid for their jobs with Bobcat Bucks, allowing them to shop in the school store.
