My students are kids who come from rough neighborhoods that are made up mostly of apartment complexes. They have a pretty hard time of it but make the most of things. Most of them come to school each day because it is a stable place for them to be and see things that make smile, get breakfast, lunch and maybe an early dinner, and see some of their favorite adults.
Our school is is a Title I school with over 90% free and reduced price lunch. We are near a federal prison and have another on the way. It's a pretty tough area, but we have some great kids who really spend their time working hard and deserve better than I am able to offer with the budget I am given.
