My students attend school in a low income/ high poverty city, where they have overcome more challenges by the time they enter fifth grade than most students. I work daily with these students to create a learning environment that takes them away from their day to day struggles and submerges them into a world of so many possibilities and experiences. My students love to submerge themselves into new books that allow them to see life through the eyes of the characters and authors. Many of my students may never leave the city of Central Falls and lack real life experiences needed that build background knowledge. Through books my students have begun to gain these experience and expand their ability to connect to different cultures, communities, and experiences.
