Think about a book that you love to read. Now think about where you are most comfortable reading that book. Do you like to curl up in a chair? Maybe you like to lay on the floor with a pillow or lean on the wall while you read. When you are comfortable, you can really engage with the story, you lose track of time, and you experience a true love of reading. I want that for my students; I want them to associate reading with being comfortable, happy, and engaged. For this to be possible, they need to have options of where they can read! A book bench not only provides extra storage for the books in our library, allowing for better organization, but it gives students a place to sit that is off the floor. The comfy floor seats provide a spot for my students who like to fidget. The seats slightly rock, so they allow for small movement while still encouraging students to stay focused on their reading. In addition to the comfortable seating options, the leveled books allow additional options for my emergent readers to choose from. Emergent readers need a lot of options, so they can still choose high interest books, just like their more advanced peers! These upgrades to our classroom library will allow for my students to grow as readers and leaders in our school. Comfortable seating options and good fit books are two of the necessary elements to creating successful and engaged readers! Please help me, help my students to LOVE reading!
