When my students know we are ending a unit, they become very excited to see what fun activity I will do for the next. They have come to school to find their classroom turned into a bakery, complete with smells of fresh brownies, hats, and aprons. We have changed the room into a construction zone where they were able to build a pretend playground using area and perimeter while wearing construction hats and vests. These are just a couple of examples of the things I have done to transform their classroom into a whole new learning experience. For the next transformation, I want to turn the classroom into a camping experience. Many of my students are outdoorsy kids, and I believe they will relate to a camping experience. Because we are a low-income school, many of my students don鈥檛 get the opportunity to go camping. With this project, I will be able to create an atmosphere that mimics being at a real campground. Tablecloths will cover the ceiling to make it seem like night and the twinkle lights will seem like stars in a dark room. Trees will be used because camping happens outside, and the trees are a way to bring the outside in. And what would camping be without a tent? While in the 鈥渃ampground鈥, students will be working math problems that all tie into camping. I think having all the camping necessities will give these children the camping experience without actually going camping. In my experience, when students are highly interested in an activity, they remember so much better!
