My students come from a very stressed environment. They are from low income homes, many not having one or both parents around. Many have never had the opportunity to express themselves, whether it be who they are or what they want to learn. When the kids come into my classroom they learn to explore different things and they learn it is okay to make mistakes. They begin to understand that learning can come from the mistakes they make. By the end of the year, they know they are smart and they have the confidence to be able to learn no matter the situation.
My school is in one of the most economically depressed areas of my state. Despite all of the obstacles, the teachers are excited about helping our students learn there is more to life than jail or welfare.
