Having young students sit in chairs at tables for long stretches of time is not a developmentally appropriate practice. Flexible seating will allow my students opportunities to move around during the day. Research has shown that these opportunities will increase engagement and learning, alleviate unwanted behaviors in the classroom, and give students more autonomy over their learning. Flexible seating will also help to build a sense of community in our classroom and increase opportunities for collaboration among students. The benefits of flexible seating will continue to contribute to the success of my students long after their year in my classroom.
