I am a special educator in Salt Lake City, Utah. My students have a variety of learning and developmental disabilities. The greatest struggle my students experience is with confidence. They are old enough to understand that they're different, and I know it hurts them. They don't feel "normal", whatever that means. Sometimes, though, magic happens in my classroom. I reach a student on his level, in his way, and I can see the connection that's been made. It is truly inspiring to see the light bulbs go on in my students' heads. It is what I live for! Those amazing, magical connections are hard-fought, and can only happen when we have the necessary resources. In special education, necessary resources vary from kid to kid based on individual need. My special education room needs new materials that vary my students' learning experiences, and will give them the opportunity to honor their strengths and meet their needs.
