My 5th graders are from a high-poverty area on the edge of a large city. They have varying backgrounds, and many of them are still trying to become fluent in English. There are days that I wonder if they have eaten dinner the evening before, and then there are days that I hear stories of my 5th graders preparing dinner for their younger siblings because their parents were at work. They have much more on their mind and in their lives than homework and school, yet they come ready to be respected, get attention, and attempt to learn every day. Yes, some days are more of a struggle than others, but that could be because they were hearing bullets in their neighborhood or were waiting for their parent to come home from work.
