Having learned to speak English by reading, I know firsthand the value of an engaging text, and the importance of exposure to vocabulary in context. My students are slightly younger than I was when I came to the United States, and they are at a perfect age to be able to synthesize their reading materials with the information taught through the curriculum.
Literacy is the number one factor in building a successful future for our kids. Students who read 20 minutes a day are exposed to 1.8 million words per year, and score 90% better on reading tests than their peers. As a 2nd/3rd grade loop teacher, I am not yet able to provide my students with a diverse variety of reading materials to satisfy all the levels of readers in my class.
