My child psychology students are from a diverse, urban public high school. We are a Title-I district with a poverty rate of 47%. Our high school has 1,800 students; 805 are considered "High Needs." Some of my students are long-time residents of Greek, Irish, and Italian heritage whose families have lived here for generations. Others are newcomers from Latin America. Many of my students will be the first in their family to go to college. A few will be the first to graduate from high school.
Our high school does not have the financial resources of the more affluent surrounding towns, but my students still dream big. There is a deep sense of pride and promise in our school. My amazing child psychology students deserve every opportunity to reach for their dreams and the resources to make it happen. I'm very proud to teach in this resilient, working-class community.
