B.I.H.S. is a small school that exclusively serves recent immigrants who are learning English as a new language. Our cohorts are comprised of students from over thirty different countries making patience, team work, and empathy cornerstones of our community. Our project-based approach is focused on encouraging our ENL students to show what they know through multiple modalities.
In my classroom these cornerstones build the foundation of our work together. Students are encouraged to explore the English language through music, reading, writing, speaking, performing, designing, and taking positive risks in their learning. We not only discuss characters, but we work on building character through a focus on developing the skills to engage in collaborative projects, the confidence to persevere through challenges, and the kindness to hear the ideas of others even when those ideas may be different from our own.
