I am the library aide for a small rural school district in Texas. One library serves ALL the students in the district, from Pre-K through High School. On a typical day, there is a steady stream of students checking out books, reading in the comfy chairs or in the new, multi-level reading area. Our school district is located in an economically disadvantaged area, with over 60% of our students receiving free or reduced lunches. In addition, a number of our children also enter school as ESL students. Like most other children, our youngest students are naturally inquisitive, with a desire to know about the world around them. They enter school this way, and our desire is to keep them engaged and actively pursuing knowledge that will improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
