The average age of books in the library is 15 years-old. Over the years, district budget cuts have resulted in school funds being depleted and made it nearly impossible to replace outdated texts as well as replenish the collection with both current and popular titles. The majority of texts in our school library are damaged and falling apart.
Research has proven the more time a child spends reading, the more their ability to read will grow, leading to gains in all subject areas. It has also shown exposure and access to print-rich environments greatly increases the chances of children learning to love to read.
Despite how old the books in our school library are, my students still enjoy reading them. I would love to give them access to new fiction and nonfiction books I know they will both love reading and benefit from academically.
Therefore, the books on this list I'm hoping to get funded and added to our school library include picture books and chapter books from a variety of levels, genres, and interests.
