I teach in an inner city public school in one of the largest cities in Massachusetts. I teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to students of all ages, from Kindergarten to Grade 6. My classes are heterogeneously mixed in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, primary language spoken, income level, and level of parental support. I have special needs students, gifted students, refugees, foster children, students who are battling hunger and homelessness, and limited-English speaking students all in the same classroom, all day long. All students qualify for free lunch and often eat two of three meals at school. Many receive help from our in-school food pantry and get little to no support with schoolwork at home. All of them need a great deal of nurturing and direction, yet they consistently come to school with a positive attitude and despite challenges outside of school, they love coming to my STEM lab!
