As I reflect on this school year and begin preparing for the next, I realize that my students could greatly benefit from a more hands-on approach to mathematics. They worked hard this year and most of them will return to my classroom in the fall for their next math course. I want to start the year off with a hands-on review of foundational concepts in working with polynomials using algebra tiles, graphing with coordinate grids and pegs, and measuring and calculating area and volume with 2D and 3D shapes.
I believe all students can learn math when given the right tools and support. Having the opportunity to physically manipulate the concepts we are learning (and those with which they are struggling), will help my students gain a stronger foundation on which to build their future mathematics studies. I look forward to bringing these resources into my math lessons and helping my students gain a deeper understanding of how math models and relates to the real world.
