My students attend an urban school in one of the most dangerous cities in California. Stereotypes abound when it comes to what students from this city must be like, but my students are examples of the greatness that will come from their generation. They show love, respect, and compassion towards one another and work hard to succeed in school. My students are truly resilient in the face of the violence they are surrounded by on a daily basis and in a school district that is constantly faced with budget cuts.
The freshmen in my class are part of a visual arts academy at our school, an academy that has been around for twenty years. Demographically, the class is predominantly African American and Latino. Students in this class may have struggled in middle school, but show a strong desire to work hard and succeed in high school.
