At Arts High School, I have the honor of not just teaching students, but artist-scholars. The combination of their talents and the fact that we serve a community of color and an even more diverse student body makes it all the more critical that our classroom be a space for transformative learning.
My lifelong challenge to artist-scholars is a three-word message written in bold letters on my classroom door: "be the change." Through art, we not only learn history; we create it. In our classroom, everyone is a historian because everyone has a unique perspective worth sharing鈥攁nd an especially unique way of doing so. Art moves people, and thus, it moves societies. It is, I believe, how my students will live up to my challenge.
